Forbidden City

What's all this hype about a city that is "forbidden?" Is it full of sex toys? Plague? Mysteries of the Universe? You can read all the guide books about this place, but they don't explain everything...

Trash can in the forbidden city.

The Forbidden Trash Can - I'm pretty sure this was forbidden because no one dared to use it. Tourists and natives alike opted to discard refuse in the gardens, fountains, and streets rather than dare to be caught using this banished recepticle.

Concession stand in the forbidden city.

The Forbidden Concession Stand - No explanation was given about this remnant of the Chinese empirical court, but everyone stayed away from it. It could have been the overpriced film or the lurking artists and translators who wanted to sway tourists with their services.

Mao's bust over the entrance to the forbidden city.

Forbidden Mao - This bust of Mao is equally confusing, but note that throwing ink-filled eggs at it or yelling "Freedom!" while walking on Tiananmen Square is very much forbidden. Evidently, killing millions of your own people with disasterous social policies is 70% OK.
