I completed the lyrics for this way back in 1995, but the music was much longer in coming. I tinkered with the melody and harmonies throughout the entire recording process. The song was inspired by Kyle Herrmann and at its heart is the idea that your soulmate might have lived long ago in another time. It is dedicated to Andrew.

The Arabian Nights, or A Thousand and One Nights, was a series of stories told in ancient Persia. Its legend tells of a sultan who had had it with permiscuous women, so he vowed to wed a new girl each night and dispose of her in the morning; of course this depleted the population of nubile women until one clever girl volunteered to be the sultan's wife. She told a story that lasted the whole night and climaxed at the precise time she was to have her head cut off. The sultan, caught up in the story, allowed her to finish it, promising that he would kill her the following day. Each night, she had a new story, for 1001 nights, until eventually the sultan saw that she was a good woman, and decided to keep her. "Alladin" is one of these stories.

Arabian Nights : Lyrics

Tell me a story by the firelight of the things you dreamed last night,
of magic rings and forgotten kings and weddings by the moonlight.
Of the Serpent Queen and the Poor Man's Dream or the Sailor who sailed so long.
You and me could walk endlessly in the place where we belong.

Tell me a story of when the world was new and fairy tales came true.
Of pale sunshine and mystic shrines where evil things were few.
Make me dream of lands unseen where you and I'd be free,
where lutes and flutes played lullabies and genies came for tea.

Once upon a time there was somebody for me,
when carpets flew and horses too and pirates sailed the sea.
Maybe I'll find that somewhere in time she's waiting patiently.
I can't get there now but I'll get there somehow and see all that love can be.
